Chapter Three: Grief Transformed
Grief is a strange companion. It lingers, reshaping the heart in unexpected ways, but it doesn’t always arrive in the form we anticipate. For Kim, the grief of losing Zam was different from any she had felt before. It wasn’t overwhelming or consuming. Instead, it was laced with something else entirely: peace.
“I thought I’d be devastated,” Kim admits. “I thought I’d feel lost without her. But it wasn’t like that. I missed her, yes. But the connection we shared… it felt intact, unbroken.”
That sense of connection was largely thanks to animal communication. Through years of practice, Kim had come to trust the bond she shared with her animals, understanding that it wasn’t limited by physical presence. When Zam passed, that trust became her anchor.
“The grief wasn’t heavy,” Kim explains. “It wasn’t tangled up with guilt or regret. I didn’t have the weight of ‘what ifs’ or ‘if onlys’ pulling me down. That’s what communication gave us - clarity, honesty, and the ability to honour her wishes without question.”

One of the most profound lessons Kim took from this experience was the understanding that grief, in its purest form, is an extension of love. “When we strip away the guilt, the anger, the things we tell ourselves we should have done differently, what’s left is love,” she says. “That’s what I felt with Zam. Just love.”

This wasn’t always the case. Kim reflects on past losses, when grief had been more complex and weighed down by doubt. “I remember questioning everything,” she says. “Did I act too soon? Did I wait too long? Did I make the right choice? It’s exhausting.”
But with Zam, things were different. Their communication had been clear. Zam had expressed her wishes, and Kim had listened. That trust in their connection brought an ease to the grieving process, allowing Kim to focus on the love they shared rather than the pain of loss.
“That’s the gift of communication,” Kim says. “It transforms grief. It doesn’t take it away - you still miss them, still feel their absence. But it changes the weight of it. It becomes lighter, almost like a warm blanket rather than a heavy burden.”
Kim often shares this perspective with her clients, many of whom are navigating their own grief. “They’re often surprised,” she says. “They’ll tell me, ‘I thought I’d feel worse. I thought I’d be inconsolable.’ And there’s almost a guilt in that. Like they think they’re not grieving ‘properly’ because it doesn’t hurt as much as they expected.”
Kim gently reminds them that this is a sign of connection, not a lack of love. “Grief doesn’t have to be unbearable to be real,” she says. “When you’ve truly communicated with your animal, when you’ve honoured their wishes, it’s natural to feel peace alongside the sadness.”

Now, as Kim looks back on her time with Zam, she feels gratitude more than anything else. Gratitude for the lessons, the love, and the connection that continues even now. “She changed me,” Kim says. “She changed how I see grief, how I see love, and how I see life. That’s her legacy.”
Insight:
“Animal communication can transform how we navigate loss. By listening deeply and honouring their wishes, we create space for peace and connection to coexist with grief”.
